Animal Place is one of the oldest and largest farmed-animal sanctuaries in the United States, spread across 600 acres near Grass Valley in the Sierra foothills — and tucked inside it is a 2.8-acre veganic vegetable farm. The pairing makes the ethic unusually vivid: the same land where rescued cows, pigs, and chickens live out their lives also grows food entirely without animal byproducts, no manure included. Summer beds produce tomatoes, summer squash, cucumbers, eggplant, peppers, potatoes, melons, and green beans, with butternut squash, onions, and kale carrying into fall. The farm has run what it bills as the only veganic CSA serving Sacramento and Nevada County, with weekly boxes roughly the size of a full grocery bag — and proceeds go back into rescuing and caring for the sanctuary's animals. Visitors can walk the sanctuary on self-guided tours Monday through Friday, seeing the growing and its reason-why side by side.
