Vegan Hills is an off-grid vegan community taking shape on roughly 103 hectares of land near the village of Pedralva in Portugal's western Algarve, a few minutes by bicycle from the Atlantic coast. The project is run by Vegoa, a nonprofit whose stated aim when it drew international attention in 2017 was nothing less than reviving vegan community life in southern Portugal. Members live in low-impact housing — yurts, camper vans, wooden cabins — and organize around self-sufficiency and permaculture on land held through the nonprofit. The structure is unusually formal for an intentional community: Vegoa's regulations define resident members (active in its Land Management or Co-Housing organizations, with physical-presence requirements), non-resident members, and inactive supporting members, all accepting shared rules grounded in vegan and sustainability values. Outsiders have two clear paths in: a dedicated visitors program and a volunteering program, both described on the community's site, with membership recruitment ongoing.
Programs, hours, and visitor policies change — always check the official site or get in touch before you go. Last verified July 8, 2026.
